| | Censuses in what is now Canada were first taken in the seventeenth century. These and subsequent censuses conducted up to the year 1851 were scattered and selective in regard to the years taken and the areas enumerated. These very early censuses generally listed only the head of the household, his/her age and occupation, the number of family members, and the person’s birthplace and religion and a few other facts.
In Ontario Province wide censuses were taken in 1842, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881,
1891, 1901 and 1911. Others have been taken after 1911 but are not avaliable to us yet.

1842 Census
An overlooked census for Naturalization information is the census of 1842 for Ontario. It has a column indicating number of years in "The Province", for each family member! Following are the columns dealing with immigration and naturalization
- Column 11. Number of natives of England belonging to each family
- Column 12. Number of natives of Ireland belonging to each family
- Column 13. Number of natives of Scotland belonging to each family
- Column 14. Number of natives of Canada of French origin
- Column 15. Number of natives of Canada of British origin
- Column 16. Number of natives of the Continent of Europe, or otherwise, specifying the
same separtately
- Column 17. Number of natives of United States of America
- Column 18. Number of years each person has been in the Province when not natives thereof
- Column 19. Number of Aliens not naturalized

1901 Census
The Canadian census returns of 1901 includes the year of immigration and naturaliztion information. 1901 consists of two schedules. Schedule 1 provides the following information: name, age, sex, year and date of birth, age, year of immigration to Canada, year of naturalization, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, occupation, and employment and education information.
- Column 12. Year of immigration to Canada
- Column 13. Year of naturalization - pa entered in this column indicates that the person has
applied for papers, but has not yet reached the full status
of citizenship.

1911 Census The 1911 Census has the following about Naturalization and Immigraton:
Column 12 - Year of Immigration to Canada, if an Immigrant
Column 13 - Year of Naturalization, if Formerly an Alien
