Many naturalizations were handled by the federal courts, especially the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. Their records are at the National Archives—Southeast Region. Some records, such as those for the U.S. court at Mobile, begin as early as 1820
The Family History Library has very few pre-1906 naturalization records for Alabama. Contact the clerk of the court for the county of interest about the availability of records.
Naturalization After 1906
For naturalization records after September 1906, contact the National Archives—Southeast Region branch, at East Point, Georgia, or the nearest office of Immigration and Naturalization Service. If you don't know where your ancestor was naturalized, ask INS to check their Index to Naturalizations 1906-1956.
