After World War I started, non-naturalized "Enemy Aliens" were required to register with United States authorities as a national security measure.
Kansas Enemy Aliens
Registrants include school children, divinity students, former United States soldiers and sailors, Roman Catholic nuns, the elderly and the infirm. For the State of Kansas the registered aliens represent a broad cross-section of the German-born population of the State.
Almost 6,000 affidavits were created by U.S. Marshals, Kansas Judicial District, 1917-1921. The series contains original affidavits of registration with personal information about each registrant, their photograph and fingerprints.
NARA Online Database
NARA has a searchable database of this set of records, but it is not indexed, and is difficult to search. I spent some time creating the following indexes of registrants (over 6,000 names!) and putting them in alphabetical order so you could search more easily. There is more detail on each person online at NARA, and for 120 there are complete digitized images of their registration papers. These offer a wealth of detail.
What Info is in these Records?
The records include maiden name of women, birth date and location, residence, names of parents (and mother's maiden name), immigration year, name of ship and port of entry, naturalization of spouse if applicable, names and birth dates of children, siblings names and residences, and more!
Digital Copies Online
Mary Anna Kraus' registration (Digital images online) gives her maiden name, parents names (including mother's maiden name), date and place of birth, names of all her children plus their full dates of birth, her year of immigration and the name of the ship she came on, her arrival port, her sister's name and address and more! These can be viewed at at ARC's online database. See Mary Anna's page for more info that I found based on the Alien Registration for clues.
Bernard Heims (no digitized images online) gives his county and state of residence, date of birth, and city and country of origin at ARC's online database. Bernard's complete registration documents including his photograph can be consulted offline.
Note that red indicates those individuals with digitized images online. If the name is black, there are no images online but there IS more information
